Copyright & Takedown

Kathayan publishes original and licensed work. If you believe material on this site infringes your rights, tell us and we will act in accordance with Indian law.

Last updated: 14 September 2026

Legal framework

Copyright in the works published on this website subsists under the Copyright Act, 1957. Complaints are handled in line with the grievance mechanism prescribed by the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Who to write to

Send notices to contact@kathayan.in with the subject line “Copyright notice”, or by post to G3, 1st Floor, Sarala Complex, Kadma Market, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand – 831005, India. Notices are handled by Dr. Rajshree Verma, Grievance Officer, appointed under Rule 3 of the IT Rules, 2021.

What a valid notice must contain

  • Your full name, postal address, email and telephone number.
  • Identification of the copyrighted work you own or are authorised to represent, with evidence of ownership or authority to act (for example, registration details, publication records or a letter of authority).
  • The exact page URL on Kathayan and, where relevant, the timecode or portion complained of.
  • A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the owner, their agent or the law.
  • A statement that the information in the notice is accurate, and that you are the owner or authorised to act on the owner's behalf.
  • Your physical or electronic signature (a typed name is accepted for email notices).

Incomplete notices may be returned for completion before review begins.

What we do next

We acknowledge every notice within 24 hours. Where a notice is complete and the claim is on its face valid, the material is restricted from public view while we review it, and the outcome is communicated within 15 days, consistent with the timelines under the IT Rules, 2021.

For videos published on third-party platforms such as YouTube, we will also direct you to that platform's own copyright process, since removal from the platform is controlled by the platform.

Counter-notice

If your material was removed and you hold the rights or a valid licence, write to the same address with evidence of your rights and a statement explaining why the removal was mistaken. Where the counter-notice is substantiated, the material is restored and both parties are informed.

Fair dealing

Before filing a notice, please consider whether the use may be permitted under the fair dealing exceptions in Section 52 of the Copyright Act, 1957 — for example, private or personal use including research, criticism or review, or the reporting of current events.

Repeat infringement

Contributors who repeatedly submit infringing material are removed from the submission programme and their pending submissions are closed.

Misuse of this process

Knowingly false or misleading notices may expose the sender to civil or criminal liability under applicable law. We keep a record of every notice and may decline to act on notices from a sender with a history of false claims.

Governing law

This policy is governed by the laws of India, with exclusive jurisdiction of the courts at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
